ExxonMobil’s GPU Adoption for Seismic Imaging

ExxonMobil has a decades long legacy of utilizing high performance computing (HPC) to solve large scale geoscience and engineering problems.  Our supercomputing infrastructure serves multiple purposes including daily production use and as a platform for R&D.  While our compute demand is historically dominated by seismic processing/imaging and reservoir engineering, we enable a broad range compute intensive applications to support our entire business.  To maintain our HPC capability and make informed investment decisions, ExxonMobil is an active participant in the HPC community engaging with vendors, academia, and monitoring the competitor landscape.  In this talk we will discuss our latest HPC investment in 2022, Discovery 5, which marks a significant change in our architectural direction from CPU-based systems to a GPU accelerated system based on NVIDIA GPUs.  We will highlight business drivers informing this investment, answer the questions "Why GPUs" and "Why now", and review our software engineering and change management planning and execution strategy.
